MMA BANS HEAD CONTACT

The NFL is not the only major sport trying to figure out how to deal with head injuries.  In a drastic move to eliminate head injuries, Ultimate Fighting Championship and several other major MMA organizations announced today that they will outlaw ‘any and all’ contact to the head. This was announced earlier today at a joint press conference including several of the organizations owners.

UFC President Dana White stated, “Our main concern is our athletes. We don’t think this rule change will hurt our organization, in fact we think it will force our fighters to become better all around and hone their skills to match it.”

With this announcement, there comes several other changes. The organizations are excited to announce that they expect more sponsors that normally wouldn’t invest in this type of sport. A representative from Conttonelle revealed that the company has been approached by several owners asking them to design special gloves for the athletes to wear that will soften blows as well as sooth the skin with aloe.

“It’s really something special, the aloe infused gloves allow them to soothe over any bruises or cuts, while still remaining super absorbent to blood.”

The changes could go in affect as early as next month. Some of the feature athletes are looking forward to the changes. Tito Ortiz said, “Now I don’t have to worry about damage to my pretty face.”

A full press release including all of the changes will be released later this week.

Penguins 5, Senators 2

PITTSBURGH --(AP)  Sidney Crosby and Mark Letestu scored power-play goals in the first period and the Penguins won their third in a row, ruining defenseman Sergei Gonchar's return to Pittsburgh by beating the slow-starting Ottawa Senators 5-2 on Monday night.

Evgeni Malkin also scored as the Penguins won their fourth in five games since losing three of their first four games. All three of those losses were in the new Consol Energy Center, where the Penguins have since won their past two.  Gonchar, the power play anchor of the Penguins' Stanley Cup finalist teams in 2008 and 2009, didn't have a memorable return in his first game back in a visiting uniform.  Gonchar was on the ice for every goal in the first two periods as Pittsburgh took a 5-1 lead, causing an exasperated coach Cory Clouston to bench goalie Brian Elliott for Robin Lehner. Elliott was pulled after stopping only 17 of 22 shots.

Ottawa, a first-round playoff loser to Pittsburgh last season, is 1-4-1 -- partly because of a power play that is only 2 of 24, including captain Daniel Alfredsson's first goal of the season.  Alfredsson made it 3-1 at 5:40 of the second, but Pascal Dupuis -- moved back to Crosby's No. 1 line -- and Kris Letang responded with goals 25 seconds apart.

Penguins backup goalie Brent Johnson, making his third consecutive start, turned aside 32 shots while improving to 4-0 this season. Marc-Andre Fleury, who last started in Pittsburgh's 4-3 loss at home to Toronto on Wednesday, is 0-3.  Johnson's best stop came when he poked the puck off Mike Fisher's stick as he neared the net on a breakaway with the Penguins up 5-2 midway through the third period.

Letestu, the Penguins' surprise scorer with four goals in seven games, took advantage of a too many men on the ice penalty for Ottawa to put a knuckleball-like shot under the crossbar at 8:39 of the first. Three minutes later, Gonchar received a standing ovation from the standing-room crowd of 18,101 during a scoreboard tribute.

Gonchar also was on the ice for Crosby's third goal in two games. Alex Goligoski's shot went wide and deflected to the side of the net, where Crosby shoved it inside the near post with Malkin by his side at 13:53.  Malkin scored himself slightly more than three minutes later, when Letestu won a faceoff in the Ottawa zone and the puck banked off Mike Comrie to the front of the net for a 3-0 Penguins lead. Letestu, a rookie who made the roster after the Penguins didn't bring back forwards Bill Guerin, Ruslan Fedotenko and Alex Ponikarovsky, had one goal in 10 games last season.

Game Notes:

Crosby had five goals and nine assists in Pittsburgh's six-game playoff series win against the Senators last spring. He previously had only two regular-season goals in 17 games against them.  Pittsburgh was 2 for 3 on the power play and is 7 for 28 in its past six games.  Ottawa has been outscored 17-8 while going 0-3-1 on the road.

The trilogy's production was also unprecedented at the time.

Borat Gets A Sequel Starring His Brother Bilo

When Borat arrived and was a huge, smash hit around the world… the people of Kazakhstan weren’t happy. Sacha Baron Cohen’s fictional character was a Kazakh and his portrayal of the country was hilariously horrible. Kazakhstan became an international punchline over night and now, even four years later, the country just can’t let it go. So now, in a weird revenge plot which sounds like it actually came from a Borat movie, they’re trying to get 20th Century Fox to sue them by making an unofficial, unauthorized sequel to Borat called My Brother, Borat.

The sequel follows an American journalist who visits Kazakhstan and ends up being taken on a tour around the country by Borat’s brother Bilo. This is of course impossible because as we learned in the original Borat movie, Borat’s family keeps Bilo safely locked away in a cage. Except for that time of course, when his sister taunted him with her vazhïn and Bilo “break the cage”. But that was a long time ago.

Pens Pound Flyers 5-1 in Philly!

The Penguins' oft-dormant power play scored twice in just over a minute early in the third period to lead them to a 5-1 victory against Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center tonight.

Daniel Briere gave the Flyers their only lead with a power-play goal at 6:43 of the opening period, as he collected the rebound of a shot off the back boards and flipped it into the net from along the left edge of the crease.

That was the only shot that eluded Penguins backup goalie Brent Johnson, who started for the third time in four games and earned his third victory.

The Penguins got that goal back at 11:31, as Sidney Crosby chipped the puck to Chris Kunitz from along the right-wing boards, allowing Kunitz to go to the net and throw a shot by Philadelphia goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.
Mark Letestu put the Penguins ahead to stay with just 44.2 seconds to go before the second intermission, as he punched in a shot from the slot after a shot from Penguins defenseman Kris Letang had struck Flyers defenseman Matt Carle in the face.

The goal, Letestu's third, netted assists for Letang and Evgeni Malkin.

The Penguins had failed to generate a shot during a 45-second two-man advantage early in the second, but made the most of a similar opportunity early in the third.  Sidney Crosby took a feed from Malkin and beat Bobrovsky from outside the right dot at 3:13 during a five-on-three to put the Penguins up by two.  If that goal staggered the Flyers, the one Crosby scored during another power play at 4:37 pretty much laid them out.

Crosby, who had just one goal in his first five games, picked up his second in 84 seconds by beating Bobrovsky with a low shot from the top of the slot to put the Penguins up, 4-1. Alex Goligoski picked up the second assist on Crosby's second goal, giving him at least one point in each of the first six games.  Matt Cooke formally put the game out of reach by scoring into an empty net while the Penguins were shorthanded at 16:36.

The Penguins, 3-3, will face Ottawa at the Consol Energy Center Monday at 7:08 p.m

Ben-efit Of The Doubt

Tomorrow afternoon marks the return of Ben Roethlisberger  to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL, and the world will be watching.  Will he be booed? Or will he receive cheers of welcome as he returns to drive the Steelers to 4-1?  One thing is for sure, there will probably be some of both. The bigger question, is how will it effect him?  Personally I feel if he’s made/making the necessary changes to be a better person it won’t bother him at all. In fact I think he would embrace the boos as a challenge to prove himself even more.

I for one think people deserve a second chance. Yes he made stupid choices,, yes he was a target, and no we don’t know exactly what happened that night at the bar. I’m willing to back him, and by all mean hope that he truly has changed.  Pittsburgh needs him to step up and be the leader he can be.  I think it would be the ultimate comeback story for him to return and lead the Steelers through the Playoffs and to a Super Bowl win.

So having said that, now on to tomorrow’s game.

Steelers Vs. Browns, 1PM EST @ Heinz Field

This game should be a blow out. Big Ben should have a great game, hitting deep threats, Ward, Wallace, and El several times for a few touchdowns.  The defense will welcome Colt McCoy to the NFL, promptly introduce him to the turf, and pick him off more than an immigrant pulls fruit of a tree.

I’m going to call this one 28-6 Steelers.
